(Newswire.net -- June 20, 2013) Calgary, AB -- Severe flooding in Calgary, High River and area has resulted in a state of emergency as floodwaters cause severe damage. Near Turner Valley a deadly sour gas pipeline has ruptured due to flooding causing the immediate evacuation of some of the area residents. Nestled in the Rocky Mountain Foothills Turner Valley is only 35 minutes southwest of Calgary's city limits.

The area were the rupture is located is managed by Legacy Oil and Gas Ltd. who operates the gas utility pipeline and is working with town officials to determine the quickest way to resolve the situation. They have crews monitoring air quality to determine if safety levels are being compromised.

Sour gas is a natural gas containing significant amounts hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Extreme caution has to be taken because sour gas is extremely poisonous and can cause death in high concentrations.  Even in small quantities sour gas is corrosive and flammable. It smells like rotten eggs.

Currently Legacy Oil and Gas Ltd. company officials are unable to comment as they deal with this emergency situation. We are awaiting an official press release from them. At this time it is unknown whether the pipeline has been repaired and the amount of gas that has leaked.

Emergency crews are warning people door to door. It is also unknown at this time whether or not the sour gas evacuation orders will be given for the 2,000 people who live in the town. The townspeople have been notified to stay indoors and be prepared to leave. More information will be forthcoming after crews have had a full chance to evaluate the situation.

Turner Valley is the birthplace of Albert’s oil and gas industry. Today no longer the boom town it still is home to many natural gas operators.
