Kinder Morgan (NYSE: KMI) has restarted the Trans Mountain pipeline Thursday evening after repairs were made to a small pipeline leak that was detected by the company’s pipeline integrity program.

(Newswire.net -- June 28, 2013) Calgary, AB -- Kinder Morgan (NYSE: KMI) has restarted the Trans Mountain pipeline Thursday evening after repairs were made to a small pipeline leak that was detected by the company’s pipeline integrity program.

It was discovered on Thursday that approximately 20 – 25 barrels of oil had leaked from the pipeline about 40 kilometers east of Hope. The oil pipeline was immediately shutdown to assess the problem.

The Trans Mountain pipeline system carries crude oil, refined or semi-refined products from Alberta to the Vancouver port. The line is capable of carrying approximately 300,000 barrels per day. To ensure safe delivery of the oil the operating pressure on pumping stations has been reduced to 80 percent according to Kinder Morgan spokesman Andy Galarnyk.

Kinder Morgan works within the guidelines of the National Energy Board to follow proper safety procedures when a spill occurs. With safety as a top priority, regulators, area First Nations, local businesses and the media were notified after the leakage was discovered. Also concerned with environmental protection site remediation has begun on the area of contamination to return it to its original condition.

Kinder Morgan is looking to expand the Trans Mountain pipeline in the near future and recently hosted an open house in Vancouver to provide information about the project.
